ARR Issue 5 Page 17 live!

Actually you know what, I’m an idiot, because while there are some that just happened as a result of my changing style and aesthetic—like how Dale’s paw pads have become white vs. Chip’s black—there are definitely some evolutions in their designs that were very intentional and in some cases very important, and I tried to make them fairly subtle and occur organically as part of the story. I guess I succeeded, because I just spaced that I’ve been making them.

Tangentially related: the boys’ designs have become (somewhat intentionally and hintfully) reminiscent of another duo of investigators in popular media. Since their original designs were references, it felt right to make their new designs references as well. Curious if anyone knows or can figure out who it is :9

…Well, now you’ve gotten me curious… but I don’t seem to be figuring it out, sorry.

I’m guessing that duo is Sam and Dean Winchester, Sam being Dale, and Dean is Chip.

I just started reading the first issue and I’m fully invested now. This is the gritty dark Rescue Rangers reboot that should have happened instead of the weird farcical movie that’s about to come out. I’m really excited to read more and catch up to the current issues. I love the story so far, and the art is fantastic.

Can you provide translations for Zipper? It’s really hard to follow the dialogue when he’s talking be because I can’t read the script. I was kind of able to make out a few things like ā€œhow much have you been drinkingā€ but the script is so inconsistent, it’s hard to piece it together. It takes away from the flow when I’m only able to understand half the dialogue. One of my pet peeves in comics or TV shows is when one character is speaking another language and another character who understands them replies in English. You’re supposed to be able to pick up the conversation from context and the English reply, but it never works, you just hear a one sided conversation.

Nope! The fact that whatever language Zipper speaks is unintelligible to the reader is deliberately used here to leave said reader somewhat in the dark; it’s not intended for the reader to be able to fully intuit what he’s saying. Otherwise I’d just put his dialogue in the traditional <translated speech brackets>.

Ah. …Yeah, ā€œSam and Dean Winchesterā€ seems to be ringing no bells for me. Thanks for figuring it out!

[looks them up]
Ahh. Apparently from the television show Supernatural. I think I may have at least heard of the show at some point.
…Hm. ā€œan American paranormal/horror showā€ And it was said that their designs were changing somewhat hintfully…
…Well, I already posted this as part of a comment on the comic page itself:

Interesting developments!

Oh yeah, I agree with this analysis, especially if you think of Of Mice and Mayhem as the official-unofficial chapter zero/prologue and you get a pretty smooth transition curve from ā€œbasically like the show but a bit more matureā€ to ā€œfull-on film noir/graphic novelā€.

I wondered aloud to Ducky recently whether you were still working on this or not. Glad it continues to have its own place in the fandom and deals with adult themes and has a distinct style as always
